About Us
Partners in life and in business, we, Gypsy and Loïc have been designing together for more than 15 years. Based in Northern California, we are renowned for our unique style and use of eco-friendly fabrics.
We got started in fashion while still in high school. Gypsy designed and presented an entire line in a fashion show complete with lights, runway and techno music for her senior class project. Loïc got into the show too as one of the models and started designing and Gypsy taught him how to sew.
After graduation we moved to San Francisco to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). Not satisfied with the ‘get ready to go into the corporate dominated fashion world’ we decided to blaze our own trail, so we left that school and enrolled in the Academy of Pattern Making and Design. We started sewing and selling our own clothing under the name “Tech Stylz” which evolved into “Balance Wear” around the Bay Area and Northern California. We participated in our first big trade show “MAGIC” in Las Vegas as part of the San Francisco Design Collective. Then we showed our first eco men’s wear line at San Francisco Fashion Week, and at POOL in New York and Las Vegas.
We had our first child while living in San Francisco. This momentous event really opened our hearts and eyes to the possibility of helping provide a better future for our son and all children by becoming ecologically minded. Thus we changed direction and began seeking out fabrics that promoted sustainable agriculture. We also realized that there is a real desire for organic clothing with fit and style. This direction has led us into the use of all sorts of fabrics including organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, wool and soy. But perhaps the most sustainable of all is the recycled cotton blends and PET fleece we discovered. These excellent fabrics make use of discarded mill ends that formerly would go into landfills. We have even started saving our own scraps from production; so look for upcoming exciting, new “reused” items, such as dog beds and toys.
We are a still a small family owned and run business, and firmly believe in having our sewing done in small family run sewing facilities that pay their workers fair wages. It may make it a bit more expensive this way, but it makes good social sense to keep our jobs here.
Our children Bizou and Yasko are our constant inspiration for creating our children’s clothes. Gypsy’s mom, Nancy, has recently come on board to help us with our office work and customer support, freeing us to concentrate on designing.Fresh and innovative, our designs appeal to the hip, young at heart, fashion conscious and environmentally aware.
