Our Environment, Our Life

It is up to us to help preserve the world for future generations. We realize the importance that our business decisions have on the outside world and are firmly committed to reducing that impact.

The fabrics we use are cottons, organic cottons, recycled fiber blends, bamboo, soy and hemp.

We strive to obtain all our fabrics from USA sources; that is, grown and milled here.

Some of the materials our fabrics are made from:

Organic Cotton: Organic cotton is farmed without pesticides. It’s been estimated that ¼ of all pesticides are used on conventionally cotton. Organic cotton is healthier for farm workers, our air, soil and water.

Recycled PET Fleece: Incredibly warm and cozy, our custom milled Polartec® fleece 85% recycled PET plastic mill ends and recycled plastic bottles. When compared to conventionally milled fleece, for every 10 yards of fabric produced, 4 gallons of gas is saved and there a reduction of 145 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Bamboo: Bamboo, actually a fast growing grass, is an excellent renewable source of material for fabric. It is grown without chemicals or pesticides, and averages 2-3 feet of growth in a day. This wonderfully strong fabric is naturally resistant to mold. Bamboo fabric is breathable and has a cool, silky feel.

Hemp: Hemp is one the most sustainable and versatile natural fabrics on the planet. It may be made soft and airy or strong and tough. It lasts for years. It can be grown without pesticides and uses little water.

Recycled cotton/poly blends: Made from mill ends of the cotton weaving industry that would have previously ended up in our landfills. Blended with recycled polyester for strength, it comes in naturally occurring colors and is therefore not dyed.

Soy: Soy fabric closes the loop on soy, as the byproduct would otherwise be waste. It is spun from the waste from the manufacture of soymilk and tofu. The chemicals used for soy fabric production are contained and reused instead of being dumped into the environment. Soy protein is liquefied and then extruded into long, continuous fibers that are then cut and processed like any other spinning fiber. This results in a smooth, soft fabric that feels similar to cashmere.

Why do we make everything in the USA?

We believe in supporting our local economy by contracting our production with other small local businesses. These are sewing companies in the San Francisco Bay Area who are also small family run businesses and pay fair wages.

We balance our carbon footprint by donating money to Terra Pass who invests money into alternative energy projects to help offset the use of burning fossil fuels.

In our business, a tremendous amount of paper gets used. In order to lessen our impact on the forests, we purchase only 100% recycled office paper products, and we reuse and recycle all we can. We also reuse our cardboard packing boxes whenever we can.
